347th Kamayan Para Sa Kalikasan Forum

February 15, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 2:00 pm

Free

In response to the massive waste problems in the Philippines, Republic Act 9003 was passed in 2000 to provide for a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management program. It requires proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste.

One of the ways to support this policy as reinforced by many environmental advocates, is to re-purpose plastic wastes by making ecobricks. These are plastic bottle containers stuffed with dry plastic wastes which are used as filler bricks in building systems. Another version of ecobricks actually resembles hollow blocks and are said to be a lot stronger than the latter. To make them, shredded plastic wastes are mixed with wet cement and shaped like the regular hollow blocks that are currently used.

Some critics of the move however, believe that ecobricks merely instilled a mentality of recycling plastic among supporting individuals, not minimizing the use of such. They therefore just contribute more wastes.

Do ecobricks really help our campaign for ecological solid waste management? Or is it another false environmental solution?
