State of Nature Assessment (Green SONA) 2019

The Philippines, made up of no less than 7,641 islands surrounded by the bluest of seas, is among the seventeen mega-diverse countries that host 70-80% of the world’s plant and animal species. The country alone is home to more than 52,177 described species. It ranks fifth in terms of species diversity, half of which are endemic or found nowhere else on the planet.

The country’s different forms of land and bodies of water shape the different ways of life of its people, as well as the other denizens of its environment. The uniqueness of this diversity serves as a major attraction of the Philippines’ billion-dollar tourism industry.

Unfortunately, while the islands are blessed with an environment that is almost unrivaled in the world, many threats continue to endanger its integrity, nay, its very survival.

What are these threats? What should and shouldn’t be done to overcome them? How does our government respond to them? These are just some of the questions we seek to answer in the 2019 State of Nature Assessment (#GreenSONA): “Pilipinas, #ParaisongNanganganib on August 27, 2019 (Tuesday, 8:00 A.M.) at the Hue Hotel, City of Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
